    • Welcome to the second annual Westknits Surprise Sock Along! It’s a mystery knit along for your feet! We are going to knit a new pair of socks together with surprising new details and design elements each week during July with the first clue launching Tuesday, July 9. The Westknits Surprise Sock Along is all about learning fun new techniques with detailed video tutorials as we knit a part of the sock each week for four total weeks of sock clues (instructions). At the end of the Sock Along you will have a beautiful pair of finished Color Popportunity Socks. You will need one skein (100g) of fingering weight sock yarn for the main color plus three contrast color mini skeins, some knitting needles, and a few stitch markers. I’m going to guide you through every step of the way as we experience an inspiring month of sock knitting together.

    • Sizes
      1 (2, 3, 4, 5)

      Yarn
      Fingering weight

      Yardage
      MC - 437yds / 400m (1 skein 100g) CC1 - 92yds / 84m (1 mini skein 20g) CC2 - 92yds / 84m (1 mini skein 20g) CC3 - 92yds / 84m (1 mini skein 20g)

You will have leftovers of each color. These yarn amounts will produce a complete pair of socks, the right sock and the left sock.

This design will also look amazing with 1 self-striping yarn instead of the 3 CC’s. If you use a yarn like Schoppel Wolle Zauberball Crazy, then you can use one ball (100g) for all of the instructions that use a CC (CC1, CC2, & CC3). You will need about 279yds / 255m total for the CC. Get creative with color and customize your Color Popportunity Socks!

      Needles
US 1 / 2.25mm DPNs or size needed to obtain gauge

You can use a circular needle if you prefer. US 1 / 2.25 circular needle in 40″ / 100cm length or size needed to obtain gauge. If you are using the Magic Loop method, then you will also need 1 spare double pointed needle in the same size or smaller for holding sts or you could use 1 spare circular needle in the same size or smaller for holding sts.

If you want to knit both socks simultaneously, then you will need two sets of DPNs or circular needles.

      Notions
      3 stitch markers, tapestry needle

      Gauge
      32 sts & 52 rnds = 4″ / 10cm in stockinette stitch after blocking
      32 sts & 64 rows = 4″ / 10cm in garter stitch after blocking

The socks are knit with a firm tidy gauge. You may need to go down one or two needle sizes to achieve gauge and that’s okay.
