  • This is a PDF knitting pattern.

Gather a colorful pile of leftover yarns and knit this fun garter stitch shlanket (shawl + blanket)! Begin in the center with a sequence of square shapes, then knit each block one section at a time. The fabric is knit seamlessly by picking up sts from the previous sections. The rows are easy to memorize as you enjoy customizing the blocks with colorful leftovers from your shawl and sweater projects. You can knit a fingering weight version or a DK weight version to utilize all of your collectible yarn bits. The pattern includes video links to help you cast on and weave in ends as you knit!

  • Sizes
    Fingering [DK]

The size is easy to customize by simply adding more color block strips as you knit your way from the center of the fabric toward the border.

    Finished Measurements
    70 [80]″ / [203]cm long, 28 [31]″ / 71 [79]cm wide. Measurements taken after blocking.

    Yarn
Use fingering weight yarns for a lightweight fabric using your leftover shawl and sock yarns.

Use DK weight yarns for a thicker warmer fabric. You can also hold two strands of fingering weight yarn together to get a DK weight thickness.

    Yardage
    Approximately 2200 [2650]yds / 2012 [2423]m total
I recommend having a pile of yarn that is more than you will need, so you have more color options as you knit. The large DK weight sample used approximately 1060g of yarn.

    Needles
Fingering weight size - Four sets US 4 / 3.5mm circular in 40′′ / 100cm length or size needed to obtain gauge

DK weight size - Four sets US 6 / 4mm circular in 40′′ / 100cm length or size needed to obtain gauge

The project is knit with 4 sides of modular blocks, so if you have 4 needles, then you can knit each of the 4 sides with a different needle. You can also place the sts from shorter sides onto waste yarn after each block, so you don’t have to have so many needles attached to your project at the same time.

    Notions
    Tapestry needle, waste yarn

    Gauge
    22 sts & 44 rows = 4″ / 10cm in garter stitch after blocking for fingering weight yarn (US 4 / 3.5mm recommended)
    20 sts & 40 rows = 4″ / 10cm in garter stitch after blocking for dk weight yarn (US 6 / 4mm recommended)
  • A variety of yarns ranging from solid wool yarns to fluffy hand dyed alpaca yarns.

Feel free to use different types of fibers in the same project. Focus on color first and allow a variety of different yarns and dye styles into your project. It’s fun to mix different types of yarns to include marled, speckled, fluffy, solid, and variegated yarns into the same palette. If you are unfamiliar with mixing different types of yarn, I recommend that you cast on the center part of the design and experiment with your yarns to make sure you select a needle size that works well with your chosen yarns. The beginning of the pattern is very small, so you can treat the cast on and first square sections like a swatch to try different yarns in your stash.
