Westy’s Besties KAL

by stephen on January 27, 2013

Today, I announce a new KAL called the Westy’s Besties KAL!

It consists of 12 new Westknits designs using Brooklyn Tweed yarns with photography by Jared Flood.

The first pattern release is February 8 and patterns will be released each Friday after until March 8. You can read more details and check out the first three patterns on Ravelry here.

Chit chat, pattern discussions, and announcements will all be available in the Westy’s Besties Ravelry group here.

I remember the day when Brooklyn Tweed yarns launched as it was the exact same day I released Westknits Book One on October 1, 2010.

I immediately snatched some yarn to use for new projects and made the Birdwing scarf…

a Creekbed prototype…

Thornton from Book Two

Caldwell from Wool People Vol. 1

and a Hesh hat…

I think it’s safe to say I love this soft woolen spun yarn.

In 2011, I was working on some new designs which resulted in a scarf and hat. I used Elsa Wool and Beaverslide Dry Goods to create a plaid-like scarf.

It’s knit back and forth with stripes in stockinette stitch with single columns of slipped stitches. There are also occasional horizontal bands that are attached to the fabric as you bind off a row. Once the horizontal band is worked, you pick up stitches and continue knitting vertically until the next horizontal band.

The “wrong side” looks equally nice I think.

After that scarf, I made a beanie style hat with Brooklyn Tweed SHELTER, similar to the Botanic Hat, but with different slipped stitch column placement and more colors to match the scarf.

I was very inspired after making these two colorful projects and several new design ideas filled my mind. So, I emailed Jared and pitched the idea of making a colorwork collection with his Brooklyn Tweed yarn and photographing the designs in Iceland. Brooklyn Tweed yarn quickly filled my apartment and I constantly knit with SHELTER and LOFT in the spring and summer of 2012 before the weekend photoshoot in July. I’ll share more about the photoshoot in the north of Iceland, but for now here are the first 3 designs that will be released February 8 for Week 1 of the Westy’s Besties KAL.

I look forward to sharing more information about the process of creating this collection, which will not only include accessories, but pullovers, vests, and a giant blanket too!

That yarn looks simply yummie.
And I love the plaid-like effect on that scarf and hat. Pure genius!

Gorgeous photographs. That light shows the yarns and designs fabulously.

Love the plaid! You definitely inherited a love of plaid from me. Remember the plum, gold and deep pink we picked out for a hat you started to go with my plaid gloves. Was that an experimental prototype to this design??

Love that they’re unisex. Or both-sex. Or any-sex.
